Portland Animal Control Alert! Here's something extremely chilling I read in the opinion section of The Oregonian:
The wrong road on animal control by Robert E. Babcock, guest opinion Friday May 29, 2009, 8:30 AM
In February, a joint task force for the city of Portland and Multnomah County completed its report and recommendations outlining a "renewed approach to animal services" that has been endorsed by city Commissioner Randy Leonard and county Chairman Ted Wheeler. ( The rest is under the cut... )
This is some of the most disturbing proposals I've heard of. Spying on the neighbors? Door-to-door surveys? Meter readers checking up on folks? YIKES! Regardless of your stand on amimal control, this kind of thing is way out of hand. Please, lets contact Randy Leonard and the rest of the City Council, as well as the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners and head this one off! I, for one, don't want to live in a "culture of compliance."

%$^&@ Raceway! I had wanted to spend my day working in the peace and quiet of my own home, but NO! %$^@ raceway goddamn noise is all-pervasive today. You'd think, with the price of gas, that this kind of garbage would have stopped some time ago, and you'd be wrong.
I am SO out of here!

Find a cute little organic eggplant at the market cut it into cutlets or just randomly chop it into bits (peel it or not -- whatever) fry it up in some olive oil with garlic and paprika MEANWHILE, heat up your leftover tomato and mushroom spaghetti sauce when the eggplant is done, throw it on a plate and cover it with the hot, tasty leftover sauce MMMMmmmm! YUMMY DINNER, and still enough sauce left over for my tomorrow night's spaghetti dinner
So, everyone here has eaten. Maya still resists her collar. Cat boxes are cleaned, for now. Dishes are washed, believe it or don't. I'm almost finished knitting our new bath mat -- it'll be done tonight. Later on there will be mint chocolate chip ice cream for dessert.

Totoro Forest Project This is the BEST! The Totoro Forest Project is seeking to preserve the forest outside Tokyo that inspired Hayao Miyazaki. There is amazing artwork which will be auctioned off, and an upcoming book, which I want to be first in line to buy. And, of course, we can contribute what we can, if we can. Tonari no Totoro, though meant for a Japanese audience, touched everyone, all over the world. This is one cause that is not enormous or daunting to me, and means something very personal because of that film. Here's the site, check it out: http://totoroforestproject.org/ If nothing else, you'll see some wonderful artwork!

RACHEL NABORS NEEDS TEAM COMICS! Rachel Nabors needs some serious dosh for dental surgery. She's got no insurance (oh, don't we know how much fun that is), and she must have the surgery. Rachel is a hardworking young manga-ka who's created hundreds of pages of manga, and self-published her work. Rachel also educates and supports other cartoonists through her site, MangaPunk and is a member of the women cartoonists collective Women's Work.

![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/60341620/11123538) [Link] | Lucky Herbert and Ramon got to go to the vet for checkups today. They didn't think they were all that lucky, though. But nothing much is wrong with them. We have to keep an eye on Ramon because of a heart murmur, which will involve checking him with the stethoscope every so often to get a heart rate and check for anything different... I can do that.
The carpet remains are all gone!!!!! Now we have the entire big front porch and furniture will be moved around soon. It's true that it may not get that much use right now, but soon, soon, soon it will be warmer and we will be out there a lot. And without the carpet there, it feels like this giant expanse of space...!
I got some good news and want to take Tom out for a spendy (well, by our standards, anyway) dinner, but it's Monday, when restaurants are often closed.

![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/52574203/11123538) [Link] | Oh! So sleepy! My class was good, and I got home in time for Lost, only to find out later that I missed out on James Marsters on Smallville. But I really got a lot of good information in the class, and the thing about TV...? Reruns.
Tom is busy doing amazing things with letters, and will be working till... a long time from now. And no walk today, due to my own distractions during the day, and Tom being too busy to walk tonight. Makes me twitchy to miss walking! Tomorrow, for sure. I'll go up to the local bead store for some stone beads I want to put into a piece I have in mind, which will be a fine walk, even if it rains.
Tomorrow I will finally hook up the scanner/printer/copier (and hope it still works!) and put in the CD player and move the other components downstairs. That will allow me to put all the old bathroom cabinet stuff into the hall closet shelves, getting it out of here where it has been for two weeks or so.

![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/67523196/11123538) [Link] | We went out to look for vinyl floor remnants for the back porch, but... NO! Just horrible colors and patterns or very expensive marmoleum that we would love, but is so spendy! Maybe we'll just paint the floor and wait until later.
When we got back, we went down into the basement and went through boxes we thought were kitchen items, but were all kinds of other things, as well. We will be getting rid of a bunch of stuff soon. :- D There were some little bowls and glasses we had wanted to find for some time (since San Francisco), a knitting bag I'd thought lost, and some junk like that. Also, extra jammies. More of the same is scheduled for tomorrow.
One of my favorite movies, Repo Man, is on the cable, right now.

Tomorrow -- more sorting out

![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/55525515/11123538) [Link] | Welcome 2008!
Last night's party was lots of fun, with interesting people, artwork and tons and tons of great food. We got home around 1:10ish, after dropping a friend off at home, and faded out pretty quickly after that.
Today, of course, was very exciting: grocery shopping. Then Tom put in the new faucet, no easy feat because of all the additional hookups under the sink for disposal, dishwasher and hot water dispenser. Those will all be gone soon enough, but the were in the way tonight. Take out from Pizza Fino for dinner. Now its time for cats to eat a late supper, and then I'm probably going to sleep.
2007 was an amazing, horrible year. I have trepidations about 2008. And NO RESOLUTIONS. At all. As usual.
Tom will finish up his part of the work tonight and then we can really get down to sorting out stuff in the basement. I think we'll play some more Scrabble. There should be a computer version of that, really. It would be convenient.

![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/51898603/11123538) [Link] | It's windy and raining outside. One of the plastic sheets over part of the back porch is coming loose and flapping loudly every minute or so... Probably I should do something about that.
We didn't find our coffee pot, but we did get the latch for the clothes chute door (so cats can't get in there) and had a nice meal at Encanto down on Lombard. We feared it would be too spendy, but it was not. However... way too... genteel... for the likes of us. And no basket o' chips on the table. The food there is really good, though, of the Southwest-sort-of-Mexican variety. We were looking for Mexican, and there are plenty of places to look around here.
Now -- feed cats
Then -- put up that curtain rod
Later -- finish up that paying work! Yeah!

Waiting for PIE Today I set up the receiver and speakers for the living room. I got Tom headphones so he (and I) don't have to hear music out of his tinny damn CPU speaker. I acquired a hand-held shower head which will soon be installed. I figured out how to get the computer to stop trying to fill in blanks for me with similar things I had already entered (hate that). AND, best of all, I found our good little bedroom radio!!! I'd been looking for that since just before we officially moved in here. It was hidden carefully in a bag with a Guy Fawkes mask on top, making me think it was all studio stuff inside... also found the kitchen radio, which I listen to now. :- D
Ten minutes till pie, whether it's still too warm, or not. Too warm?? PIE??? Isn't that what the ice cream is for?
Back to work now.

Want to Do Something Good ... For Free? I got this from glamtasm's post:
Free Food for Animal Shelter http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=3
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free. It's in a purple box in the middle of the page. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
They also have items for sale, etc. Check it out!

![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/52574203/11123538) [Link] | I just finished dinner after doing new house things most of the day, with a break for late lunch and early Torchwood. We indeed moved a lot of the kitchen, and more possibly tomorrow. This evening ( New house and home improvement here -- boring! )Also on the Things That Simply Must Go List: all the light fixtures. Fast! We have excellent replacements already on hand.
I'll be taking a nap now, get up around 6 or 7 and dive back into packing, working, whatever. We only have until Wednesday to get the hell out, and until 7am Tuesday to get the POD all fulled up and ready to go across town.

The Start of That Long Last Week Here I had a little over 4 hours sleep, a bowl of cereal, coffee. Now I'm more or less ready to get back into it... Today I'm going to put together boxes before I start in, so I can just go box to box to box instead of stopping to tape a new box together... I learn, but not quickly, obviously.
Tom's gone downtown to get the permit(s) to park the giant POD in the street here and over at the new place later. He got the big size, and that will hold a lot. I'm going to lobby for it to take as much furniture as possible, and we'll see how that works, since all that would have to go in last to be unloaded first. If it can be efficiently organized, though, Tom is the one to do it.
Meanwhile, I'm going to go hunt for a water bill so I can have our account number, then make all the calls to them, phone company, cable, newspaper... Then back to boxing. (But I don't even get to hit anyone -- bummer!) Finish the studio and take care of the guest/cat/catch-all room is on the agenda today, along with signing papers and getting curtain rods and maybe some curtain material for the new house. I'll sew/adapt curtains tonight/tomorrow, then put my beautiful machine and cabinet away (forever?).
The POD will be in place maybe as early as this afternoon, and we can start loading that up, starting with garage stuff, in those odd moments when we don't have anything better to do. XD We want to be nearly almost completely done with this by Friday, and we'll do a Good Will run sometime over the weekend or Monday when the floors may be going in. Maybe a few Good Will runs, as the weather is not going to cooperate with leaving items outside up for grabs. Rain is coming this afternoon, and one and off all through the week and weekend. Wow! What a great time to be moving!

![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/67974888/11123538) [Link] | Tom and I took a short drive over to the new place to be sure there would be room for a POD in front of the house, and there is. The sellers were there, moving out the rest of their things, and they are such nice people. I felt awkward going up and asking questions, but they were happy to answer. It's actually a good thing we went, because we got them to agree to take the appliances with them!! That will make things a whole lot easier, moving ours in without having to move the old ones out. We were able to determine where the cabinets came from, too. They're Home Depot off-the-shelf, just a better grade than had been put in here. Getting the extra cabinet for over the stove to support the range hood and a larger cabinet to replace the dishwasher will be easy. And we'll be able to get pull-out shelves for the rest. Boring, I know, but it takes a load off our minds.
Meanwhile, Torchwood and Battlestar Galactica: Razor tonight. Then LOTS MORE PACKING tonight, tomorrow, repeat as needed. Somewhere in there we'll play around with the little scale model cut-outs Tom made of the rooms in the house and our furniture to see what will fit of the stuff we imagine we'll keep, to see what else has to go...

![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/60341620/11123538) [Link] | Woke up weirdly... I thought it was Monday and I was distressed because I couldn't remember what happened on Torchwood or Galactica.
We don't have enough room in our driveway for the POD. We'll have to get a permit to park it in the street, but they don't want to put it in front of our house because of the nearby intersection... AGGG. Another typical day already... There is even less room in the driveway at the new place, plus a whole lot of folks park along that street and the street is narrower. Here's the part where we get mover quotes, etc.
Time for cats now.
